Since I can remember I have always been attracted to people and the stories they are willing to share with me. In my early 20's I pursued photojournalism. Got the opportunity to live in Asia for a Summer. Traveled to Africa, South America and a few other places I'm not allowed to share publicly. Went to school in Hawaii for photojournalism. I got a couple of my photos published in a magazine in Germany. But as I came back home to Greenville SC I was struggling to find my footing in photography. No one seemed to be hiring a photojournalist and I wanted to stay home to be near family. So instead I changed course. I took any photography opportunity that came my way. I started to lose sight of my purpose, and said yes to the paycheck instead of asking myself does this align with my purpose? Eventually it lead to burn out as I was lost in my own story. As a result I couldn't figure out my "Why" and I ended up leaving photography for what I thought was for good.
Roy Bennett says it perfectly, “If you don't know who you truly are, you'll never know what you really want." It's a wild concept to think you can walk in this body of yours and never really know who you are. And for most of my life I hid behind my camera wanting to share the stories of those around me instead of looking at my own story and asking myself who am I? And who do I want to be in this world?
It took me fighting for my own life to really understand my love of Photojournalism. Once I started to believe in my own story and my life, the boldness that was hidden all of my life began to grow. I understood why authenticity was so important to me in my photographs. Because my very soul was crying out for me to be that for me.
It wasn't easy. It was messy.. it took hitting my breaking point where i was willing to go deeper with myself and face all that I feared. I realized there was nothing to be afraid of and I fell in love with the woman I was hiding from myself. Those challenging years of my life, helped empower and gave me a greater level of confidence that I didn't have before. It required me believeing in myself to realize my "Why." Which is the reason I came back to photography.
I realized why I was so in love with photojournalism. It was my heart towards people. If I have learned anything about myself in the past 35 years of my life. Is that I have and always will be the kind of woman who will believe in the good of humanity. When I was out on the streets, and cities of different countries. It was the beauty of a simple moment that goes unnoticed by many. The raw interactions of humanity intertwined with each other. Those moments are what I lived for.
So this is what I do thru my media. Is to love on your story. To share your purpose. To inspire humanity to believe in each other. Because at the end of the day, people don't buy what you do. People buy WHY you do it." This is something I share with everyone I work with and remind them.. People want to feel like they are part of something. They want you to make them feel connected to your story. Because at the end of the day.. we are all human who crave deep connection with each other.
You too have a heart to give, a story to share, a purpose to change the hearts of mankind.
Ubuntu
One of my Favorite Words is Ubuntu - which means, "I am because we are. And since we are, therefor I am. " Its such a powerful statement that holds so much meaning and what I believe is the whole point of living. I carry this out in my work, as it is my purpose.
My Approach
